Mr. Pedro L. Alonso Fernández

Director of the Barcelona International Health Research Center (CRESIB, Hospital Clínic-University of Barcelona) and Director of the WHO’s Global Malaria Programme

Doctor of Medicine, Professor at the University of Barcelona, Department Chief at the Hospital Clínic and Director of the Barcelona International Health Research Centre (CRESIB), for the last 20 years Pedro L. Alonso Fernández has devoted himself to biomedical research with a focus on health problems in the developing countries and especially in Africa. He has published over 200 articles in international journals. The academic journal Science ranked his work as one of the ten scientific milestones of 2004 and the magazine Time chose him as one of the eighteen heroes of global health. He promoted the creation of the Manhiça Health Research Center (CISM, Mozambique), which was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize 2008 for International Cooperation. Over the course of his career, Pedro L. Alonso Fernández has received various awards and distinctions. Likewise, he has served on numerous national and international committees and is now a member of the Board of Trustees of the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV, Geneva) and the President of the Executive Committee of the Malaria Eradication Research Agenda. From 2014 is the Director of the World Health Organization’s Global Malaria Programme.
