Vocations and talent

New edition of the ‘Cross-border Mathematics Saturday in Alt Empordà’

The workshop, which will be held on 6 February 2016, aims to bring young people closer to mathematics

The Princess of Girona Foundation, the Ferran Sunyer Balaguer Foundation and Figueres City Council have organised ‘Cross-border Mathematics Saturday in Alt Empordà’, to be held on 6 February 2016 with the aim of demonstrating the presence of mathematics in our everyday lives and stimulating students’ interest through education in an entrepreneurial way. The initiative is aimed at 11th- and 12th-grade high school students, preferably from educational centres in Alt Empordà (Catalonia) and Vallespir (France), who will spend the whole day participating in different activities being held at the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Integrated Education Centre in Figueres. Also a specific workshop for students in the fourth year of 'ESO' is done.

The emphasis of the whole programme is to highlight the presence of mathematics in today’s technology; all this in an informative manner and with the main aim of encouraging interest and vocations in science, promoting teamwork and placing mathematics in the context of current problems.

The activities, which will run from 10 o’clock in the morning until 2 o’clock in the afternoon, will focus on four subjects coordinated by professors from the Department of Mathematics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona:

  • And if the sum of the angles of a triangle not worth 180 degrees?
  • Votes and elections: Not so easy as it seems, but we could do it better.
  • Playing with the chance using random numbers.
  • Origami and mathematics: the role of the geometry

These themes are a sample of the areas and disciplines in which mathematics play an important role. Each session will include an informal talk given by a university professor and a workshop-contest on each theme with teams of two students. From these groups, the winning team in each of the four themes will receive a digital tablet.
