Vocations and talent

Fostering mathematical vocations

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the presence of mathematics in everyday life and stimulate students’ interest through education in an entrepreneurial way

This initiative is co-organised by the Princess of Girona Foundation, the Ferran Sunyer Balaguer Foundation (FFSB) and Figueres City Council, and is implemented at the workshop ‘Cross-border Mathematics Saturday in Alt Empordà’, aimed at 11th- and 12th-grade high school students. Also a specific workshop for students in the fourth year of 'ESO' is done.

The main objectives of this project are:

1. Demonstrate the presence of mathematics in today’s world in the different scientific specialisations (including social sciences) and in new technologies.

2. Foster interest and scientific vocations in mathematics.

3. Encourage team work and active participation in experimentation and problem solving by creating workshops on the scientific themes being studied, strengthening the educational nature of scientific dissemination.

4. Place mathematics and its specialisations in the context of real, everyday problems to distance it from the concept of an abstract science divorced from the real world.

This programme presents mathematics in action, always in a modern and participative context which goes beyond a typical lecture or exhibition, combining the teaching elements of both with the irreplaceable values of the direct experience of "doing maths".
