Mr. Valentin Fuster Carulla

General Director of the Cardiovascular Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital of New York and of the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC)

Graduate and Doctor of Medicine and Surgery by the Faculty of Barcelona, Dr. Valentí Fuster Carulla has held important positions, including those of President of the American Heart Association and President of the World Heart Federation. At present he is a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the American National Academy of Sciences and President of its Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease. His work is focused on advanced translational research aimed at understanding, preventing and treating cardiovascular disease worldwide. Dr. Fuster has received numerous distinctions for his work, having been made Doctor Honoris Causa by twenty-six universities and he has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Cardiology. Dr. Fuster is the only cardiologist who has received the foremost research awards from the four leading international cardiology organizations: the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the European Cardiology Society, and the Inter-American Cardiology Society. His research on the origin of myocardial infarction earned him the Prince of Asturias Prize for Research in 1996.
