The Prince of Girona Foundation and the GERDD association send a further 250 wheelchairs to Uruguay

This is the second shipment of material sent as part of their cooperation project

03/10/2011

The Prince of Girona Foundation and the GERDD Association (Manager of Resources for the Development of the Disabled) have sent a further 250 wheelchairs to Uruguay. This is the second shipment of material and represents consolidation of the project initiated in 2010 for the creation of a company-workshop with the ONPLI Association for the Disabled (Uruguayan National Organisation for the Occupational Integration of Persons with a Disability).

The centre produces, maintains and distributes wheelchairs and other orthopaedic articles for disabled people in Latin America. The wheelchairs are sent disassembled for assembly and distribution by the workshop.

The ONPLI Association for the Disabled already has a centre with the conditions necessary to produce and maintain the wheelchairs. A collaboration agreement has also been reached between the association for the disabled and the Ministry of Social Development of Uruguay, whereby the ministry will acquire the wheelchairs produced by ONPLI and will distribute them to disabled people who have no technical assistance.

Parallel to this project and in association with the University of Girona, the Prince of Girona Foundation and the GERDD Association are promoting the creation of a Global R+D Network. The aim of this project is to establish a web platform for the distribution and design of technical aids for people with physical disabilities.

It is envisaged that another shipment of components will be sent in December to Guatemala, where the project is being run with the association TRANSICIONES.

The Prince of Girona Foundation

The agreement with the GERDD Association is one of the social and cooperation measures that the Prince of Girona Foundation has taken to encourage initiatives aimed at preventing inequality.

The Foundation's mission is to support the training and development of young people in order to boost the capacity of new generations both to build a better and more supportive society, and also to focus on dealing with the social problems in our surroundings, with a view to providing care and promoting the most vulnerable and least prosperous collectives, with particular emphasis on young people.

With this mission, the Foundation is working in four areas: scientific and academic, cultural and sports, business, and social and cooperation
