More than 90 young people attend the Prince of Girona and Ferran Sunyer Balaguer foundations’ ‘Maths Saturday’

The event held in Figueres was attended by students from a dozen educational centres

25/02/2012

More than 90 young people from a dozen educational centres in Girona came together on 25 February in Figueres to participate in 'Mathematics Saturday in the County of L'Alt Empordà', which was organised jointly by the Prince of Girona and Ferran Sunyer Balaguer foundations. The aim of the event was to demonstrate the presence of mathematics in our everyday lives and to stimulate students' interest through education and in an entrepreneurial way. Figueres City Council collaborated with the initiative, which is aimed at 11th- & 12th-grade high school students who spent the whole morning participating in the different activities being held in the Center of Integrated Training in Figueres.

The prize-giving ceremony was attended by Mr. Santi Vila, Mayor of Figueres; Mr. Josep Fernández, Deputy Director of Girona Territorial Services at the Government of Catalonia's Education Department; Mrs. Mònica Margarit, General Manager of the Prince of Girona Foundation; Mr. Salvador Giner, Chairman of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation and Chairman of the Institute of Catalan Studies.

The winning teams in the competition were:

  • The art of encoding messages: Pep Rodeja and Joan Gratacós.
  • Mathematics and astrodynamics: Ariadna Matabosch and Raquel Sebastià.
  • Evolution and mathematics: Anna Agustí and Àngel Agustí.

A talk-discussion was given on each topic by a university lecturer and a workshop-competition was held with teams of two students. The winning teams chosen from this event, together with the teams awarded second and third place, have been invited to attend the IMPULSA Forum 2012, which is organised by the Prince of Girona Foundation. The winners were also presented with a digital tablet.
