More than 80 young people from fifteen educational centres in Girona took part in the ‘Cross-border Mathematics Saturday in the County of Alt Empordà’ which was held in Figueres on 2 February. The event was co-organised by the Prince of Girona and the Ferran Sunyer Balaguer foundations and Figueres City Council. The aim was to demonstrate the presence of mathematics in our everyday lives and stimulate students’ interest through education in an entrepreneurial way. The initiative is aimed at 11th- and 12th-grade secondary school students, who spent the whole morning participating in different activities being held at the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Integrated Education Centre in Figueres. This year’s event also involved students from French Catalonia.

The prize-giving ceremony was attended by Mrs. Marta Felip, Mayoress of Figueres, Mrs. Mònica Margarit, General Manager of the Prince of Girona Foundation, and Mr. Manuel Castellet, Director of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation.

The winning teams in the competition were:

  • The mathematics of chance: Quim Cruañas and Louis Clergue, from Cendrassos Secondary School in Figueres
  • Electoral mathematics: Pau Batlle and Carme Crous, from Ramon Muntaner Secondary School in Figueres
  • The world through a hole: projective geometry: Júlia Carrión and Anna González, from Illes de Rodes Secondary School in Roses

Each session included an informal talk given by a university professor and a workshop-contest on each theme with teams of two students. The winning teams and the runners-up were chosen from these groups, and they have been invited to attend the IMPULSA Forum 2013, which is organised by the Prince of Girona Foundation. The winners also received a digital tablet.
